Abstract/Summary:
A new class of active viscoelastic treatment of beams with built-in compressional damping control capabilities is presented. The dynamic effects of compressional damping in the vibratory response of beams fully treated with Electromagnetic Compressional Damping (ECD) treatment are investigated. Analytical solutions for three layer laminated damping treatment are developed using the mechanical impedance approach. The results suggest that the ECD treatment produce a significant improvement over conventional passive constrained layer damping (PCLD). Such an improved performance is attributed to the additional compressional damping generated by virtue of the electromagnetic interactions between specially arranged wires.
