This work dealt with system performance of air-breathing pulse detonation engines (PDEs). Numerical schemes suitable for treating detonation phenomena were first developed based on the space-time method. Detonation physics of multi component reactive systems was then investigated. Finally, system performance and thermodynamic cycle efficiency of air-breathing PDEs was analyzed. The effects of all known processes on engine performance were studied systematically, and the various mechanisms responsible for performance loss were identified. The influence of exhaust nozzle design on engine propulsive efficiency was discussed as well. |
