Abstract/Summary:
The linear induction launcher is composed of two principle parts: the barrel, consisting of an array of coils energized in polyphase fashion, so as to create a traveling wave, and a projectile housed in a thin-walled aluminum cylinder (sleeve). For the sake of efficiency, the barrel is divided into sections that are energized sequentially at stepwise increasing frequency, so that the velocity of the propelling traveling wave increases as it travels along the barrel from breach to muzzle.; This dissertation deals mainly with the design of a flywheel motor/generator set as an energy source for an eight-section hypervelocity linear induction coil launcher. The dissertation, using a structure that was chosen from literature, presents a conceptual design of the flywheel motor-generator set. A previously developed simulation program was modified to include the generator equivalent circuit and its flywheel circuit and its flywheel inertia. Also the dissertation describes how to improve the performance of a four-section linear induction coil launcher, powered by synchronous generators, by re-designing the drive coils so that they may be fed by a larger number of phases than customary three.
