General crack problem in sandwiched functionally graded materials

Abstract/Summary:
The problem of an oriented crack embedded in an isotropic functionally graded material (FGM) sandwiched between two infinite isotropic homogeneous materials was solved. A general methodology for mixed boundary value problem was constructed and applied to develop the fundamental solution to fully interacting multiple cracks. This methodology was also used to generate the solution to fully interacting multiple cracks. This methodology was also used to generate the fundamental solution for an interface crack of a FGM strip sandwiched between two homogeneous layers of finite thickness.; The shear modulus of the FGM varied exponentially with the y-coordinate and the non-homogeneity constant ({dollar}gamma{dollar}). The obtained stress intensity factors (SIF) and strain energy release rates (SERR) showed sensitivity to the non-homogeneity constant, thickness of the FGM, crack orientation, density and location.
