Abstract/Summary:
The Fresh Start Program, a psychotherapeutic day school located on the campus of St. Luke's Hospital in Racine, Wisconsin, was designed in response to the increasing behavioral problems exhibited by students in Racine Unified Schools. The program is intended to treat the most disruptive behavior disorders mid prevent students from being placed in exceptional education programs. This study examined the programs effectiveness in reducing se behaviors. Pre- and post-test scores on the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and the Child and Adolescent Functional Assessment Scale (CAFAS) were collected at admission and discharge of the first 26 children to complete the program. Results indicate the Fresh Start Program effectively reduces externalizing disorders, such as aggression, delinquent behavior, and impulsivity, as well as internalizing disorders such as anxiety and depression. Anecdotal evidence suggests that these changes in behavior are being maintained over time as well.
