Abstract/Summary:
The work presented here will explore the fabrication of rare earth-doped silica fibers utilizing the Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition (MCVD) process. The incorporation of rare earth ions into the deposited silica host glass was accomplished with the use of rare earth chelate compounds. The rare earth chelate precursors were derived from the 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedione ligands. The rare earth chelates possess a vapor pressure of ;The rare earth chelate delivery system was employed in the fabrication of a number of rare earth-doped fiber devices. Fibers doped with ;The fabrication of Er and Er/Yb-doped fibers for use as optical amplifiers at 1535 nm was also explored. Since the use of rare earth organic compounds generates water, a method of eliminating hydroxyl contamination using Cl...
