ecently, the demonstration of the first discharge-pumped soft x-ray laser in Ne-like Ar at 46.9 nm pumped in a capillary discharge plasma column opened a new route to the development of compact table-top ultrashort wavelength amplifiers. This Dissertation reports the study of two important issues for the fUrther development of capillary discharge excited soft x-ray lasers: the reduction of the deleterious effects of refraction in the laser medium, and the extension of the laser wavelength range by excitation of materials produced from solid targets.
