Abstract/Summary:
In this dissertation, a fully three dimensional, dynamic micromagnetic model based on Landau-Lifshitz formulation has been developed for the thin film write head. This micromagnetic model has been utilized to investigate not only the static magnetic domain distributions inside the thin film write head, but also the dynamic magnetization switching process of the head. Extensive micromagnetic simulations have been carried out to understand the dynamic head switching process, to characterize the head field, to investigate the impacts of material property and driving current on the recording performance, and to engineer innovative write head structures to support future high frequency and high density magnetic recording.; The dissertation consists of the following parts: (1) The three dimensional, dynamic micromagnetic model. (2) The validation of the micromagnetic model. (3) Effect of damping constants on the head switching speed. (4) Modeling of deep sub-micron track width write heads. (5) Miniature write heads for 100 Gbit/in2 and beyond. (6) Micro write heads with closed-edge lamination.
