Abstract/Summary:
This study investigated the relationship between the strategic experience of the outsiders on the board of directors and the strategy of the firm for firms that had stability in the CEO position. The study also investigated whether other board characteristics such as tenure, power, and independence moderated the relationship between experience and firm strategy. To test these relationships, archival data was gathered for publicly-held firms and their directors and executives from 2000 through 2006.;The relationship between the strategic experience of the outsiders on the board of directors and the strategy of the firm for firms that had stability in the CEO position was found. Further, this relationship was found to be moderated by board independence for firms pursuing a strategy of geographic diversification. No other moderation effects for board tenure or board power were found.
