Abstract/Summary:
This study examines the correlation between job satisfaction, Kouzes and Posner's leadership behaviors and Hackman and Oldham's characteristics among research and development scientists. In this study 64 corporate headquarter-based research and development scientists in a U.S. specialty chemical organization were sampled. The findings revealed that employees in this study were, overall, more satisfied than the average employee working in a profit organization. Significant correlations were determined between the job satisfaction facets of job in general, work itself satisfaction and job characteristics. Inferred is that the theoretical precepts put forward by Hackman and Oldham's theory that an enriched job leads to greater job satisfaction hold true for the scientists in this study. No significant correlation exists between scientist's overall job satisfaction, satisfaction with supervision, and the five Kouzes and Posner's leadership behaviors. These findings are not consistent with previous research that allows the inference, that there is a significant positive relationship between transformational leadership behaviors and employee job satisfaction. The findings demonstrate the need for further research on the variables influencing job satisfaction facets.
