Abstract/Summary:
Research has demonstrated that humans frequently misapply social norms to computers. The psychological origins of this behavior were experimentally investigated to determine if fast, experiential cognitive processes are responsible. Two manipulations designed to promote experiential difficulty, or disfluency, were employed. A disfluent experiential signal successfully disrupted such processes and produced lowered social effects. This indicates that fast, experiential cognitive processes underlie social responses to computers.
