Abstract/Summary:
This generic, qualitative study, conducted through the lens of the attribution theory, explored the attitudes and perceptions of employers towards employment candidates possessing a degree obtained from an online distant learning institution. The purpose of this study was to explore whether the significant financial investments made by individuals in obtaining their degree through distant learning allows them to be competitive in the job market. The researcher conducted a series of interviews with eight selected employers representing a cross section of government, corporate, not-for-profit, and private business enterprises. The findings of this study showed that, despite concerns regarding academic rigor, a perceived lack of face-to-face social interactions with peers and faculty members, and a perceived lack of practical experience in a virtual learning environment, the employers did not rule out the hiring of a candidate with an online degree. Relative to applicants with traditional degrees, applicants with online degrees were perceived to possess strong time management skills, more perseverance, and a high level of discipline.
