Abstract/Summary:
This study was an evaluation of Sundown, an alternative educational program for students who are at-risk in Adams County School District 50 in Westminster, CO. The study includes a review of current literature in four areas including: (a) at-risk students and the factors that led to their academic failure, (b) the basis for alternative education laws, (c) the laws that govern alternative education for at-risk students, and (d) successful existing alternative education programs for at-risk students. The study then evaluated Sundown as an effective alternative means for temporarily educating the at-risk student and an effective means for imparting the skills and tools to the at-risk learner that are necessary to function within the current traditional school system. This was measured through six indicators: (a) academics, (b) attendance, (c) discipline incidents, (d) standards acquisition, (e) program completion, and (f) continued scholastic success.
