A question was whether service learning implemented in the classroom could improve third grader's reading comprehension skills. The goal of this study was to show that with the implementation of service learning into guided reading lessons, students would be more successful in their reading comprehension abilities. The study was conducted in an elementary school, and included 40 students in third grade who were eight and nine years old. The study was conducted over a four-week period that contained weekly assessments and lessons as well as a pre and post assessments. Other research studies and literature have shown students involved with service learning perform better academically, have an overall sense of wellbeing, and feel successful in areas outside of academics. Results indicated that over the four-week period, 80% of students showed growth in their reading comprehension skills.
