Abstract/Summary:
The difficulties presented by clients with both a developmental disability and borderline personality disorder are presented. Etiology, prevalence, assessment, and treatment are examined. An adaptation of Systems Treatment for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving (STEPPS) currently in use at an Intermediate Care Facility for the Mentally Retarded (ICF/MR) was examined for efficacy in treating aggression and self-injurious behaviors in this population. Procedures are outlined and methodology is presented. Results were mixed, clients who remained in treatment showed reductions in most problems behaviors, but only a few reached statistical significance. Treatment appeared to be therapeutically significant for some of the clients and this is further discussed.
