Abstract/Summary:
This study investigated the relationship between Nigerian undergraduate students' concerns for information privacy (CFIP) and their willingness to provide personal information to transact on the Internet (PPIT). It also examined the mediating effect of internet trust (IT) and perceived internet privacy risk (PR), as well as the moderating effect of age and gender on the relationship between CFIP and PPIT. With the steady growth of e-commerce and other forms of online transaction, the need for individuals to share personal information on the Internet has also increased. Information privacy has therefore evolved into a significant ethical and business issue for both organizations and individuals. Studies that examined information privacy concerns on online behavioral intentions are many; however, to date, none has considered this phenomenon using a Nigerian population. This social interpretation study therefore contributes to research by addressing this gap in knowledge using a quantitative method and a cross-sectional survey design. A total of 682 undergraduate students from a Nigerian university responded to the survey, and the data analysis was conducted using SPSSRTM for descriptive analysis and AMOS(TM) for structural equation modeling. The result of the analysis generated mixed findings for the stated hypotheses. In particular, no support was found for the causal relationship that argued that CFIP has a negative relationship with PPIT. The mediating effects of IT and PR were also not supported. However, strong relationships were found between CFIP and PR and between IT and PPIT. Lastly, the moderation effects of age and gender on the relationship between CFIP and PPIT were not supported.
