| In the eyes of the PRC, Taiwan is the problem. In the eyes of the ROC in Taiwan, PRC is the problem. But no solution has ever been reached since 1949. Complicating an already complicated problem, the "Taiwanese independence" diehards are trying to divorce both Chinas, and at the same time, democracy is making two Taiwans.; Having examined various theories for a workable solution to the confrontation across the Taiwan Strait, this study focuses on the issue of sovereignty. With the acknowledgment of a different Taiwanese identity and Taiwan's intension in pursuing its cultural and political departure from the traditional Chinese identity, this study proposes the peaceful sovereign division theory (PSDT) as to make the compromise acceptable to all three parties across the Taiwan Strait. The PSDT elevates the fact that, despite the difference in status as sovereign as PRC, disputed de facto sovereign as ROC on Taiwan (ROCT), or no sovereign at all for the time being as Republic of Taiwan (ROT), the above first two, PRC and ROCT, if not yet ROT, can be part of the proposed one sovereign entity, ROC, to which both the mainland and the island will surrender their respect sovereigns as half Chinas.; From both conventional and futuristic points of view, this research on the sovereignty issue in Taiwan-China relations is to prepare, in an unprecedented way, for a possible settlement of a half-century long hostile confrontation. Its meaningful significance includes: (1) to prove the failure of the four existing solutions on the crisis of Taiwan Straits; (2) to discuss the sovereignty issue with the Western political concepts in a Chinese context; (3) to provide rational hypotheses for a divided sovereignty under one country of China: ROC'S sovereignty over Taiwan vs. PRC's over mainland China; (4) to restore and rejuvenate the historical Republic of China with the combination of two "half Chinas"; (5) to embrace Taiwanese political independence from Chinese mainlanders' rule and its economic integration with the mainland China. |
