Abstract/Summary:
Social stigma is still associated with seeking and receiving mental health services in the new millennium. Social stigma creates a barrier and discourages individuals from possibly receiving the most appropriate and best mental health care. Traditionally, consumers have been cautious about seeking mental health services. When in need of services, they have consulted friends, primary care physicians, and telephone directories. Currently in the Hampton Roads area.; A centralized database for state-licensed mental health professionals is nonexistent. A strategy was devised whereby a comprehensive review of all mental health professionals practicing on the Southside and Peninsula was compiled to provide consumers a centralize location for accessing mental health information based on such factors as needs and desires of the consumer. This strategy, an online mental health resource directory, will empower individuals to seek services in the confidential setting of their homes.
