Abstract/Summary:
This study examined the relationship between risk factors for sexual recidivism and personality patterns among adolescent sex offenders. An attempt was made to determine if certain risk factors corresponded to the presence of a particular personality profile. Archival data from adolescents (N = 65) in an outpatient sex offender treatment program, and juvenile hall were assessed using the Sex Offender Dangerousness Evaluation (SODE) and the Millon Adolescent Clinical Inventory.;The analyses suggested there was one significant personality profile that emerged based on offenders who are high in antisocial and sexual behavior as defined in the current study. These offenders scored higher on the Millon Adolescent Clinical Inventory (MACI) scales of unruly, forceful, oppositional, doleful, self-demeaning, and borderline, and lower on submissive, conforming, dramatizing, and egotistic.;A factor analysis was performed using the original version of the SODE to determine the number of factors that could be extracted using the dangerousness evaluation. Four factors proved to be significant, and are discussed.;Additional analyses were performed to provide descriptive information on the dangerousness evaluation for an adolescent population. No significant difference on the risk evaluation was found between those offenders who completed their evaluations in the outpatient program or juvenile hall. In addition, the overall risk level was compared to determine if a certain level of risk for sexual re-offense corresponded with a personality profile. Overall, no significance was found, suggesting that particular personality profiles do not correspond with levels of dangerousness in adolescents. Implications for treatment, and further understanding of adolescent sex offenders were discussed.
