Abstract/Summary:
Late modernist poetry in Britain tended toward a culturalist expression that inflected not only the kinds of poetry being written, but also shaped the perception of poetry's role in solidifying an ethnolinguistic English identity. This dissertation addresses how the structural developments occurred first, and primarily, within the pages of literary magazines. I use the term "poetic periodical formations" to describe networks of exchange within and between different literary magazines that condition the types of poetry published and the kinds of poetic discourse that come to predominate following the Second World War.
