The homilies were analyzed using the Thompson Analysis Guide of Rhetorical Elements that originated under the leadership of David Platt in his dissertation entitled "An Analysis of Rhetorical Elements in Selected Origenist Homilies." As the analyses were completed, distinct patterns were revealed from the preaching of Chrysostom concerning his use of the species of rhetoric and the canons of rhetoric.;Research disclosed that Chrysostom used epideictic rhetoric as his dominant manner of enhancing the knowledge of his congregation through praise and blame. He incorporated the use of deliberative and judicial rhetoric to support his use of epideictic rhetoric, both developing and supporting his argumentation before calling the congregations in Antioch and Constantinople to embrace change. Additionally, Chrysostom employed the canons of invention, arrangement, and style to communicate effectively with his people. He displayed a use of ethos, pathos, and logos by using the canon of invention. He also revealed the importance of arrangement for effective communication along with the value of style for communicating in different preaching contexts and situations.;The analyses provided numerous implications for contemporary preaching. Chrysostom revealed the importance of the species of rhetoric for encouraging, exhorting, and confronting the people of God. He also revealed the importance of argumentation for establishing a credible manner of calling any congregation to embrace change through expositional preaching. He revealed the importance of style for effective preaching, taking into account both positive and negative features in his preaching. | | Keywords/Search Tags: | Rhetorical elements, Revealed the importance, Homilies, Chrysostom, Selected, Antioch, Preaching | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
