Abstract/Summary:
A prolific author, Andrée Chedid tirelessly worked to bridge the French and the Middle Eastern cultures throughout her writing. Sensitive to the plight of humanity, tormented by fear of death, overwhelmed by the unknowable where timeless fugitives joined the eternal value of the moment, Chedid proposes an approach to fraternity, recognition and humanity. The major themes in her work are many and varied. Chedid emphasized the intertwining of opposites that polarize our lives—past and future, the simplicity and the complexity of any action in the universe. This general opposition emerges in her poetry and prose to promote tolerance, communication and fellowship. Chedid is interested in revealing what unites humanity. Poetry is a constant 'humanism' quest to reinvent, to find.
