Logboats of the southeastern United States: Investigating the question of form (North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia)

This investigation is a general study of logboat forms in Eastern North America, with particular attention to southeastern United States. While scholars have studied logboats for years, very little is known about the factors that determine their form. Past research of logboats has focused on their cultural or geographic significance, rather than their environment. This research tests if logboat forms are dependent on the environment in which they are built. This means that the form of the canoe relies on the available material, the size, type, and shape of the available trees. Additionally, the investigation revisits the issue of reburial at Lake Phelps, NC and determines if the management of the cultural resource through reburial has been successful.
