Abstract/Summary:
This qualitative case study examined the implementation of the Visual and Performing Arts standards in a competitive environment. With no dance credential and no accountability for the arts in public schools, the existing problems of definition, clarification, continuity, and accountability are persistent in dance education. The purpose of this study sought to investigate these problems by exploring one facet of current dance education; how the implementation of the Visual and Performing Arts standards, within the course curriculum, influences a competition dance team course. The study is based on document analysis of lesson plans, course descriptions and outlines; interviews with a principal and dance educator; and classroom observations. The results of the study indicate a lack of implementation of the Visual and Performing Arts standards within this specific classroom, and recommendations suggest further investigation into the many facets of dance education in secondary schools.
