Maxwell's equations and a historical study of incorporating them into undergraduate mathematics and engineering education

Abstract/Summary:
In spite of the importance of Maxwell's equations, the teaching and learning of electromagnetic theory based upon Maxwell's theory have encountered difficulties. The major reasons for the difficulties include the lack of historical perspectives on the genesis of Maxwell's equations in current engineering and mathematics curricula and inadequate physical interpretations of electromagnetic phenomena and/or vector fields.; To increase students' motivation for learning Maxwell's equations, this study examines original sources describing how Maxwell's thoughts evolved over the period, and how he originated the concept of fields.; Since the historical development of the incorporation of Maxwell's equations into mathematics and engineering curricula in the twentieth century has not been examined, this study conducts such examination to find alternative ways to teach and learn electromagnetic theory using original sources including works of Maxwell's contemporaries and his followers. At present those material and original views are not readily available in engineering and mathematics books.; Finally this study examines contributions made by Maxwell's equations to the development of the modern system of vector analysis. The works of Tait, Gibbs, and Heaviside are analyzed to see how collectively they put forth the birth of the modern system of vector analysis—Maxwell or Maxwell's Treatise bridged all these seemingly disparate but distinguished individuals.; This study serves as a source book for engineering and mathematics educators who want to integrate historical developments into their teaching to motivate students for better learning. The students and teachers of engineering and mathematics may use this study to find original, historical resources available for their learning and teaching. This study gives historical perspectives of interconnection between electromagnetism and vector analysis to students, and thus leads them to better understanding of both.
