Abstract/Summary:
The utility industry is undergoing a number of changes. A few examples include deregulation, rapid technological change, globalization, layoffs resulting from consolidation, an aging workforce, greater ethnic diversification in the labor market, and the exodus of skilled workers coupled with the shortage of qualified new hires. Because of these changes, utility companies are facing the grave reality that unless they aggressively implement strategies to recruit, develop, retain existing and new talent, and implement diversity initiatives effectively, they will struggle to remain competitive. This study explores the strategies that seven utility companies use in their responses to the many changes listed above that impact both the U.S. workforce and the utility industry. It examines the business and industry drivers that have and continue to preempt utility companies to place greater emphasis on diversity. The author guides the reader through the key strategies, unique challenges, best practices, and lessons learned in the implementation of seven utility companies' diversity initiatives.
