Abstract/Summary:
This study was designed to examine the applicability of Bass's model of transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership in the context of the home healthcare agency environment. The main purpose of this study was to empirically investigate the relationship of leadership styles to subordinates' perceived outcomes in the home healthcare agency environment. A mixed-methods research study was conducted to investigate the relationship between home healthcare chief executive officers' (CEOs') leadership styles and employee outcomes. The study focused on 4 home healthcare agencies in north central Texas. The primary quantitative data were collected through the use of the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire 5X Short Form to determine the relationship between transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership styles of home healthcare agency CEOs and the outcome variables of satisfaction with leader, perception of leader effectiveness, and willingness to exert extra effort. A total of 126 surveys were utilized to calculate the data for this study. The secondary embedded qualitative data were obtained through direct interviews conducted with each of the 4 CEOs of the agencies. The study results indicated there is a significant relationship between the CEOs' leadership styles and all three outcome variables. Findings were validated through multivariate techniques of multiple regression coefficients. Findings are consistent with existing literature.
