Abstract/Summary:
Emerging literature on the adjustment of children being raised by same-sex parents has begun to articulate the associated challenges and strengths of nontraditional, unique family compositions. Missing from this research are studies that capture the day-to-day experiences of adolescents who are being raised in same-sex parented families in the current climate of political, legal, and social change. In order to expand the existing knowledge, fourteen adolescents who range in age from 13 to 18 years were interviewed for this project. A semi-structured, open-ended interview format was used to conduct interviews with twelve female and two male teenagers predominately from New England states.;This method of study allowed for each participant to explore their thoughts, feelings, and perceptions and to assign meaning to their experiences. Findings from this project include resounding themes of (1) Family Concepts, (2) Development of Self, (3) Tough Times and Tough Transitions, (4) Coming Out, and (5) Communities of Understanding. Each theme was comprised of several sub-themes that further elucidate the essence of a collective experience. This study gives voice to a unique group of youngsters who are being talked about but who are infrequently talked to. Gaining their unique perspectives and information about what it is like to grow up with gay or lesbian parent(s) has helped to identify topics that are in need of further study, as well as, identify ways in which we can enhance our ability to provide supportive services to these individuals and their families.
