Abstract/Summary:
The possibility of falling increases with age, and the consequences of the fall tend to be more significant. As the threat of falling increases, it is imperative to screen for and treat as many risk factors as possible by means of multi-factorial assessments and interventions. The guideline created by the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) is a tool used to identify potential fallers. A fall prevention program with use of the AGS guidelines has been implemented in an assisted living facility that is able to house up to 100 residents. The fall prevention program included staff and residential fall prevention education, fall risk assessments, and appropriate use of fall prevention interventions as outlined in the AGS clinical practice guidelines for fall prevention. The results of the program showed a decrease of 50% in residential falls by the end of the second month of program implementation.
