Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study is to identify common elements in the parental decisions and chosen activities of the parents with gifted high school students who achieve academic success. Several factors contribute to the academic success of children, including but not limited to family life, peer influence, environment, and socioeconomic status of both the family and the community in which they live. With family acknowledged as a significant factor, researching what parental decisions are made that encourage academic success gains importance.;Many students identified as gifted lack the proper academic success to gain admission to universities. This highlights the necessity to discover what parental decisions may encourage academic success. The qualitative approach to this research focused on the parents' explanations as to why their gifted children achieved academic success and the variety of parental support that was offered.;The delicate balance of involvement and independence were the dominant themes revealed by the parents. Parents worked to find this balance within their relationships with their children. They incorporated involvement and independence when making academic choices for the child. The parents also used this balance to determine how to enhance the child's natural academic ability.;This study identifies what influenced the parents' decisions and how these decisions translated to academic success for their gifted children.
