Abstract/Summary:
This study was designed to explore the teacher education programs offered by the Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS). The admission, completion and course requirements were discussed for each program. The demographics of students enrolled in each program were presented along with portability descriptions of each teacher education program. Nine community colleges and community technical colleges were investigated. Seven colleges were found to offer teacher education programs and were included in the present study. Data were collected by interviewing Campus Experts and reviewing college literature.;The study revealed that two types of teacher education programs are offered by the LCTCS, the most common being the Associate of Science in Teaching (AST). The admission and completion requirements were similar for AST programs among the LCTCS institutions and courses in these programs transfer as a block of credits to university colleges of education. When the demographics are considered for all students enrolled in LCTCS teacher education programs, findings show that the majority of students were white females between the ages of 18 and 25.;The study may serve as an informative reference for community college policy makers in Louisiana and other states. It may also serve as a guide for potential teacher education students. The study may allow students to discover the admission, completion and course requirements and the portability of teacher education programs they are considering.
