Abstract/Summary:
A mixed method approach of quantitative and qualitative research was used in this study to determine how law enforcement professionals perceived andragogical (adult learning) theories, distance learning and higher education in law enforcement. The sample population was a large urban police department with over 13,000 police employees. Law enforcement continues to utilize conventional training modalities established long ago even though the way to police has evolved to meet the needs of current trends in crime. The data collected suggests new insights to traditional training methodologies currently espoused by law enforcement agencies. "Updated training" and "more training" were key themes throughout the study. This sentiment was carried through the ranks from the patrol officer up to exempt rank personnel.
