Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation is a complication of three essays, each of which explores the effect of intrahousehold competition on economic outcomes. The first essay is titled "Intrahousehold Competition, Legal Regimes and Divorce," and it illustrates how the influence of intrahousehold competition on divorce outcomes varies across legal regimes. The second is titled "Intrahousehold Competition over Time and Legal Regimes," and it offers a theoretical explanation for why divorce rates have seemingly converged across legal regimes over time. The third chapter is titled "The State's Choice of Marriage Contract " This analysis endogenizes a state's choice of divorce law, in order to explain differences that exist in the legal regimes adopted by U.S. states.
