Abstract/Summary:
Companies need leaders; however, companies do not always provide the resources to train individuals to become leaders. As a result, individuals have had to find alternate means to acquire leadership skills. One way to acquire leadership skills is by volunteering. Volunteering provides a mechanism to test new methods and theories, and acquire skills that may not be readily available in the workplace. This research investigated the relationship of work-related cultural values and leadership in Black Greek Organizations (BGOs). The nine historically Black Greek Organizations are: Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Iota Phi Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Phi Beta Sigma, Omega Psi Phi, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta. It permitted conclusions about the benefits of members' management and leadership development. Leadership styles of various groups of BGOs are related to cultural values using the Multi-Factor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) and the Dorfman and Howell's Cultural Values Scale (CVS). In addition, the study examined the extent to which there are differences in gender, age, and BGO membership among the dimensions of the two variable sets (culture and leadership). The results indicate BGOs tend to provide rewards in exchange for efforts, are less likely to wait to give corrective feedback, and have a high degree of coaching individuals to establish a strong, cohesive group.
