Abstract/Summary:
Many prominent clarinetists began their careers in Aspen, due in no small part to the teaching of Bil Jackson, Ted Oien, and Joaquin Valdepenas. Although their teaching styles are diverse, these clarinetists have become some of the most influential clarinet pedagogues of the modern era. Yet to date, there has been no major documentation of the pedagogy of Jackson, Oien, and Valdepenas.;For centuries, the skills and techniques of instrumental performance have been transmitted orally from one generation to the next. While textbooks have been written for most disciplines within the field of music, pedagogy survives mostly in the abstract. This dissertation assimilates the actual content of lessons with masters such as the three clarinet teachers at the Aspen Music Festival.;This work was accomplished through interviews with the teachers themselves, statements from students, and extensive observation of lessons. Most of these interviews and observations were recorded and later transcribed. The student interviews were conducted by e-mail and excerpted throughout the dissertation. The information was gathered in 2006 and 2007 and then compiled in May and June, 2007. The resulting work is as an important reference for teachers and students and addresses all aspects of clarinet playing, ranging from tone production to technique and articulation.;This dissertation serves to preserve the pedagogy of the clarinet masters of the Aspen Music Festival. Bil Jackson, Ted Oien, and Joaquin Valdepenas have taught many influential clarinetists and future generations of musicians can benefit from their expertise.
