Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation examines the production of children's literature in translation in communist and post-communist Poland by analyzing three English-language novels, Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery, Little Lord Fauntleroy by Frances Hodgson Burnett and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, and their various translations into the Polish language.;Given that the art of translation is central to my analysis, I discuss various translation theories as influential factors in the methodologies of and approaches to translating for child and juvenile readers. I show that no translation model has so far been able to answer many questions that my analysis considers.;The main argument, which this dissertation centres on, is that translation approaches and methodologies in children's literature are indicative of different time periods in Poland's history and, therefore, they are illustrative of varying socio-political, educational and ideological norms. And while textual analysis is used to arrive at most conclusions, I also consider the role of individual translators, publishers, editors and book vendors in the translation of children's literature in Poland in order to arrive at a more comprehensive and encompassing model of translating children's literature.;Beginning with a chapter that traces the development of children's literature from obscurity into an entity within its own rights, I discuss how the mode of production of children's literature has always been directly dependent on societal views about and understanding of its children. I show that translation of children's literature as an intercultural exchange exists in the form permitted by those who control what is published and how information is shared with young readers.
