This clinical dissertation focuses on the topic of suicide risk and protective factors in U.S. military populations. Suicide is a major clinical issue among service members and veterans who have high rates of suicide due to numerous risk factors. In addition, there is a limited amount of treatment options to reduce the risk of suicide, especially for military populations. In this dissertation, a critical review of the literature was conducted in order to understand the current research on military and veteran suicide. The literature review examines suicide risk factors such as PTSD, childhood trauma, unemployment, loneliness, isolation, alienation, substance use, and military culture. In addition, this dissertation examines protective factors, prevention efforts, and treatment approaches. In an effort to bridge the gap between research and practice, this dissertation integrates interviews and feedback from practicing clinical and research psychologists who work with veterans and service members at risk of suicide. Based on the research findings and interviews, a clinical product, A Clinician's Guide for Suicide Risk Factors in U.S. Military Populations, was developed for the purpose of distributing this knowledge to the psychological community in order to enhance service delivery. The guide provides mental health professionals with comprehensive information on suicide risk factors, resources, and treatment options. It also proposes a multifaceted approach to support current assessments and treatments for suicide for military populations. Lastly, a discussion of the study's limitations and conclusions are included in this dissertation.
