Abstract/Summary:
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a condition that presents with problems of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulse control can affect individuals throughout the lifespan. Many of these adults continue to seek relief from the deleterious effects of the primary and secondary symptoms of ADHD. Although many current treatments can be effective in the reduction of symptoms, ADHD-sufferers continue to seek treatment alternatives to attain overall emotional and behavior relief. This study examines the viability of a mindfulness-based awareness approach for treatment of adults with ADHD. Mindfulness, a well-known and popular current meditation procedure designed by the physician Jon Kabat-Zinn, has received widespread empirical support for its use for a variety of mood and physical conditions. ADHD appears to be another clinical disorder that could benefit from its application. This project also includes the development of a mindfulness meditation audio program, which may eventually provide a useful additional treatment option for adults with ADHD. The audio treatment program is evaluated by doctoral level professionals who treat ADHD and meditators who teach mindfulness, and their feedback is presented.
