Abstract/Summary:
The primary objective of this study was to examine and identify those factors considered to be associated with length of homelessness, to analyze its prevalence in certain areas, and to assess its impact on public health. Specifically, length of homelessness, ethnic category, social-economic status (SES), and area lived in prior to being homeless were analyzed. The populations under examination were adult homeless individuals between the ages of 21 and 60 who resided in the city or county of Sacramento. Consenting adults were administered a self-report demographics questionnaire. One hundred and one adults consisting of 71 males and 22 females participated in this study. The data were analyzed using a chi-square cross-tabs test statistic and a one-way ANOVA. Results of the study showed that African Americans reported higher rates of homelessness than did whites. Results additionally showed that homeless individuals from inner city areas reported being homeless at higher rates than did those from suburban areas.
