Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this dissertation was to integrate cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness-based approaches to create an individual treatment program for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). GAD is a condition characterized by chronic uncontrollable worry, which causes substantial emotional distress and impairment in daily functioning. In order to develop this treatment manual, relevant theoretical models of GAD were reviewed. In addition, pertinent cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness-based research was included to help guide the construction of this manual. Moreover, a review of established treatment programs that have integrated these two orientations in order to treat other psychological disorders was provided. Common targets of treatment between these two theoretical models were compared, and fundamental differences were discussed. Largely based on a review of the current literature, a rationale for the theoretical utility of combining these two approaches was also provided. The integrated treatment program constructed in this dissertation was designed to be implemented by a trained cognitive-behavioral therapist with a background in meditative practices. This treatment manual has been separated into eight modules, rather than sessions, to afford greater flexibility and attention to clinical judgment.
