Abstract/Summary:
In this section, a review of the relevant literature regarding birth-order and its effect on personality is presented. Darwin's principle of divergence, as it applies to family dynamics, and Sulloway's niche model of personality development are discussed at length. More specifically, his view as to how siblings of different birth-order assume different niches in the family, leading to different personality characteristics, is at the core of this presentation. Sulloway's hypotheses with respect to birth-order and its effect on the dimensions of the 5-factor model of personality are discussed, as is his meta-analytic study of the relevant literature. Numerous research studies are discussed with the majority supporting birth-order effect. Additionally, relevant literature on the development of the MMPI-A and its two separate translations to the Hispanic language are discussed and the MMPI-A is presented as a valid instrument for assessing personality.;Keywords: birth-order, personality, MMPI-A study, niche model, Spanish speaking...
