Abstract/Summary:
Basic concepts on photonic microcavity and nanocavity devices with quantum dot active material are introduced at the beginning together with their applications and promises in photonic integrated circuits and quantum information processing.; Then a brief introduction to the sample growth techniques and a detailed description of the sample fabrication procedure are presented.; Lasing in microdisk cavity and photonic crystal nanocavity devices with InAs quantum dot active material is reported next. Lasing behavior's dependence on temperature and wavelength is presented and explained by a simple model.; The last part is on the proposal and demonstration of photonic crystal nanocavity edge emitting lasers which indicate a type of semiconductor lasers that have a small footprint, a high quality factor, easy integration, and a high collection efficiency in the same device. This is critical for high density photonic integrated circuits.
