The rising phenomenon of Chinese enterprise internationalization has captured growing attention from the researchers from various disciplines for more than last two decades.The current dissertation aims to throw light over the emergence of enterprises from the emerging economies to enhance our understanding.The flow of emerging economy outward foreign direct investment especially that of China has upraised some stimulating research queries.Why do the emerging economy enterprises invest overseas?Why some specific destinations tend to attract OFDI from the rest of developing countries.How the motives of developed countries differ from those of developing nations?What are the different entry mode options available while investing abroad?The purpose of this study is to sort out answers to these questions.The first chapter of this research introduces the overall research work.This part describes the overview and significance of the study.Furthermore,it discusses the research questions to be answered,together with the objectives of the research work.Chapter two tends to address two crucial questions 1)how emerging county multinational enterprises differ from advanced country multinationals and 2)What are fertile areas regarding extension and development of China's OFDI research.The critical findings from the literature overview reveal that emerging economy MNEs from advanced country MNEs in several contexts such as advantages,motivations,entry modes and location choices.For example,their home country-specific advantages,as well as their firm-specific advantages,are incredibly different.In the end,this chapter offers some suggestions such as integration of major theories with others theoretical framework,paying attention to longitudinal studies,considering comparative research with other EMNEs,and conducting multilevel analysis,for moving the research on Chinese internationalization forward theoretically and its further extension.Chapter three of this thesis aims to offer an overview of the major theories in the context of firms'internationalization.It gives a short overview of the trends of Chinese OFDI.The different development stages of Chinese OFDI from 1978 until 2016 are reviewed.Furthermore,it discusses the current institutional environment of China,political and administrative authorities which regulate Chinese OFDI.Finally,various motivations of Chinese OFDI are described.Chapter four aims to identify the shortcoming of the official statistics on Chinese OFDI and shows how disaggregated(firm-level)data enables us to understand the phenomena of Chinese outward foreign FDI.This chapter has two fundamental contributions.First,it provides analysis of the some key shortcomings of MOFCOM data systematically.Secondly,it suggests inferences regarding misinterpretation of the tendencies they portray and the partial description they give for the increasing part of FDI from China.To explore the motives entry modes,and location choices of Chinese OFDI,chapter five gets insights from eclectic paradigm and institutional.Drawing upon a panel data analysis for the period 2003-2016,this chapter confirms that there exist differences between advanced and developing nations in drawing China's cross-border M&As and Greenfield investment.In addition to macroeconomic factors,host institutional environment,such as the degree of host government effectiveness also affect Chinese cross-border M&A and Greenfield investments.This relative investigation will help to enhance our knowledge regarding critical motivations that drive Chinese enterprises to enter different kinds of developed and developing countries,and also show the moderating effects of host county's intuitional environment and motives on the internationalization activity.
