The education was forced to respond to the transformation during the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China.With diplomacy,politic and economy,education must response to international change,get an identity,that is to say,higher education should be internationalization,academic and professionalization.Internationalization of higher education is a kind of educational concept and mode,including the internationalization of curriculum,scholars and students learning,research and the flow of internationalization;cross-border education projects.Internationalization of higher education emphasizes the influence of internationalization,not only the participation of international resource,the cooperation of international education in power,the cultivation of international talents,but also an international impact.During the period of the Republic of China,Internationalization of higher education is an aim,education was forced to open to the outside world gradually,pay close attention to both content and mode of education abroad,begin to learn and imitate the modem university idea and model of school management,a variety of international education reform.In this dissertation,the intercollegiate cooperation is regarded as a research perspective,and the Harvard-Yenching Institute as a case to study,which is widely accepted in the academic circle as a model of Chinese-foreign cooperation in running schools during the period of the Republic of China.In order to analyze from perspective of the intercollegiate cooperation of Harvard-Yenching Institute's establishment,development,some points are investigated such as the reasons why the intercollegiate cooperation can promote the process of internationalization of higher education,and what it has done to promote the intercollegiate cooperation in the process of internationalization of higher education,how it can advance the intercollegiate cooperation in the process of internationalization of higher education.Paying attention to internationalization operation model of the intercollegiate cooperation and its effects can deepen the connotation to higher education of the Republic of China from the perspective of educational history.The study of intercollegiate cooperation case can provide analysis with historical experience and realistic reference for today's intercollegiate cooperation,which is to give advice to the intercollegiate cooperation,to improve the efficiency of internationalization of education and the quality of talent cultivation.This dissertation focuses on the cooperation of universities with the process of internationalization of higher education in the period of the Republic of China,which analyze from the intercollegiate cooperation's cause,process,result and impact.This dissertation consists of three parts:the first chapter and the seventh chapter introduce the research background,significance,problem,method,data and conclusion.The second chapter is an overview of the Harvard-Yenching Institute's origin,method and practice in the period of Republic of China.The third,fourth,fifth,sixth chapters consider the Harvard-Yenching Institute as a case to analyze the specific elements of the intercollegiate cooperation in four aspects of the organization.financing,information collecting,teaching and research.The intercollegiate cooperation is held among universities which aim to achieve educational resources sharing,co-cultivate talents,the exchange between teachers and students.Intercollegiate cooperation has a lot of ways,such as university-to-university cooperation,multilateral cooperation of universities,and the cooperation based on the foundation of external support and resources.Harvard-Yenching Institute is a successful example of the intercollegiate cooperation between Chinese and American universities which promote their internationalization through the intercollegiate cooperation.Harvard-Yenching Institute which was established based on mutual need In January,1928,is an academic research and talent training joint institution,a cooperation based on equality and mutual benefit.The establishment of Harvard-Yenching Institute was a result of their demand of development fund and the consistent educational pursuit.As an intercollegiate cooperation organization,its normal operation depends on its stable structure,fixed cooperation fund,perfect regulations,the internationalization of the teaching and research and other factors.This dissertation analyzes the specific elements of the intercollegiate cooperation from four aspects of organizations,financing,teaching and researches,information of Harvard-Yenching Institute.The intercollegiate cooperation needs to establish the academic community which is worthy of its name.Harvard-Yenching Institute includes The Board of Trustee,Board of Managers of Peking University,the Harvard-Yenching Institute Education Committee.Annual assessment is an important mechanism during the operation of Harvard-Yenching Institute,so as to correct possible deviation from goals,promot healthy development.The material guarantee is the basic for the intercollegiate cooperation,fixed financing support is one of the key factors for success,whose successful cooperation is due to a huge Hall foundation for support.The use of cooperation fund was supervised by the Board of Trustee.According to the cooperation agreement.the use of cooperation fund is restricted to”Chinese Studies" in the academic field,which included some specific divisions,such as history and religion history,philosophy and the philosophy of religion,language and literature,art and archaeology and anthropology four parts(or can be subdivided into Chinese history,religion,philosophy,literature,art and other seven areas),this definition disclosed the main focuses of the Harvard-Yenching Institute.The successful intercollegiate cooperation greatly promotes the academic cooperation and research,broaden the academic cooperation,and deepen the academic research,form academic research orientation without utilitarian.Through intercollegiate cooperation between China and the United States,study for a higher degree,faculty exchange,setting up a visiting professor,Yenching and Harvard University cultivate a batch of a large number of American scholars on Chinese learning and Chinese academic leader who master knowledge of both western and Chinese,who become the important figure in academic research,and contribute to the dissemination,inheritance and creation of knowledge.In support of Harvard Yenching Institute,Yenching University give priority to master education,Harvard University give priority to doctor education,while other universities give priority to undergraduate education.Both the foreign and local experience makes education in line with national progress,meanwhile do not derail the world.Therefore,a number of outstanding professionals had been cultivated in 1920's and 1930's.In the construction of information and library,it is mainly reflected in three aspects such as the construction of library,Yenching Journal of Chinese Studies and Harvard Journal of Asiatic Studies and other academic periodicals and the compilation of the Index of Chinese Classic.The famous Harvard Yenching Library is one of the material collections.Yenching Journal of Chinese Studies in the period of the Republic of China is one of the best three academic journals while it has the same place with Journal of Chinese Studies edited by National Peking University and Journal of Tsinghua by Tsinghua University.It emphasizes to wide new areas of research,new problems and new methods.Harvard Journal of Asiatic Studies mainly published the latest research papers of sinology in different countries,which remains to be the international famous journals in sinology.Through the information construction and publication of academic journals and academic monographs,the Harvard-Yenching Institute improved its international academic reputation and academic status,attracted a large number of first-class scholars to the research and teaching.At the same time,a series of index is the important basis of the transmission of Chinese culture and also provides information for Chinese research.The starting point of the intercollegiate cooperation is based on both the willingness to cooperate and the goal is to carry joint academic research and talent training.The internationalization of the idea and the practice of running universities promote the development of cooperation between the two countries at the same time,their cooperative aim is defined clearly which is easy to evaluate,their cooperative content is specific which is easy to take cooperative education activities.From the standardization,institutionalization,acting according the rules and scientific evaluation of their cooperative process management can be seen the institutionalization is the guarantee of the cooperation.The intercollegiate cooperation formed a academic community,which can provide the driving force for sustainable development.The study on intercollegiate cooperation can be used a historical reference to today's internationalization of higher education.The sources of data comes from the archives of The Archives of the United Board for Christian Higher Education,The Second Historical Archives of China,full-text database of the period of the Republic of China in Shanghai library,Da Cheng Database of journal full-text and many educational papers published during the period of the Republic of China.This dissertation is a tentative research of the intercollegiate cooperation during the period of the Republic of China from the international perspective.
