On The Dual Effects Of Film And Television Technology On Documentaries

The invention of Movie began with documentary film.The technology evolution of film and television reflects the art history of film and television including documentary images.Technology is double-sided,and the dual role of film and television technology in documentaries must be twofold.The appropriate and complementary use of technology can produce accurate cognition,expand aesthetic realm,and bring people the power of imagination.However,if it is not otherwise,the inappropriate use of technology will produce false illusions,similar to naturalism or technicalism,become self-restrictive and further inhibit the formation of aesthetic images.Film and television technology has the ability to realistically record,reveal and reproduce the real world.This advantage should not become an obstacle or a force of resistance to our effort of reaching higher artistic domain.At present,the world is more and more filled and influenced by images of entity instead of the physical entity itself.The primary function of film and television technology should be recording and revealing reality.The amplification of artistic imagination is secondary.Based on the investigation of the regularity and inevitability of the development of film and television technology,combined with the documentary aesthetics,this paper brings up the concept of "Image Cocoon".First,in practice,the concept of "Image Cocoon" is derived from the immersive visual experience in the creation of VR documentary films;in theory,the concept was formed from the combination of technical philosophy,Don Ihde’s technical phenomenology,Merleau-Ponty’s theory of perceptual phenomenology and Gestalt psychology.In the relationship of “Human-Technology-World”,according to concept “Technology Cocoon” by Don Ihde,and "Information Cocoon" by sunstein,"Image Cocoon" is deduced.In the relationship of "Human-Image-World","Image Cocoon" serves as an intermediary technical system."Image Cocoon",as an intermediary,embodies two dimensions: one is "the objectification of the intrinsic power of human being";and other is "the formation from nature to human being".Film and television technology is developed along with several dimensions such as human extension,body,bionics,humanization,human scale,apperception,and material reality.Secondly,this article argues from three aspects,"the promotion and regularity of film and television technology to documentary aesthetics","the relationship between the stratification and function of the image squatting","the promotion and construction of the specific documentary film and television technology”,that the " Image Cocoon " is an advanced technology presentation of a " cinema total ".“Image Cocoons” is not only the content,but also the channel and the terminal of communication;it is both abstract and figurative;it embodies the dialectical unity of material and spirit,subject and object.The core and foundation of the " Image Cocoons” is the documentary image.It carries out efficient and accurate social cognition in a personal way.If we look at documentary film as a mirror of human being survival history,"Image Cocoon” could serve as comfortable small habitat for people.Finally,this thesis,from the aesthetic realm of audiovisual imagery point of view,analyzes the contradiction and ethical dilemma of documentary,criticizes the negative impact of technology alienation,and proposes that documentary image can deepen the relationship between human and environment,and improve spiritual growth.As an intermediary between people and the world,“Image Cocoon" has melted the binary opposition and presented a beautiful scene of the unity of man and nature and a poetic image of man living on earth in harmony.
