Since the middle of the 20 th century, with the expansion of contemporary art to the whole field of visual culture,we have witnessed many works of contemporary art with the theme of the inherent culture, tradition and memory of specific regions. How can we understand this socalled "visual anthropology" shift? Focusing on the aesthetics of "survival and symptoms" by French art historian Georges Didi-Huberman,this paper attempts to sort out the historical memory of contemporary Asian art.To this end,the biennale in Seoul and Taipei is selected as the case study in this paper, because the two exhibitions opened simultaneously in the 2010 s provide us with common topics about the cold war, colonialism and modernity in Asia,as well as the present nature of this history that can make us rethink.Didi-Huberman continues the aesthetic concept of Aby Warburg, which is deeply studied and connected with modern thoughts of multi-dimension.He advocates the image research theory based on "survival and symptoms" to reconsider the multiple relations between art works and memory, traces, symptoms, dreams and history. Here, images are not limited to the imitation of the visual world, but break the existing rigid image and provide us with the possibility of opening up new epistemology. At this time, the existing narrow art theory has been extended to the scope of visual culture history or anthropology, and what is needed at present is not the pure art but the interdisciplinary composite approach.Through his image theory, this thesis revolts against time in the traditional sense and sets up the heterogeneity of the concept of historical time.We seek out the possibilities of the future through the forgotten yet valuable past. Finally,I will deeply study the dialectical operation principle between the image’s survival and symptoms, and further explore the specific way to express this principle from his planning practice. This paper is divided into four parts, the introduction to the local art anthropology trends and summarize the literature review. The first chapter reviews the concepts of survival and symptom of Didi-Hubermann and explores the montage plan to integrate these concepts. The second chapter studies the relationship between war and violence, the possibility of different kinds of history, colonization, folk beliefs and memories through the analysis of Taipei biennale. The third chapter discusses the modern significance of ghosts and gods and the problems of Asian women through the analysis of the media exhibition in Seoul. The fourth chapter deals with the crisis faced by the contemporary Asian region and the characteristics of the cultural exchanges in the Asian region. Therefore,I hope that this paper can liberate the fragmentary images of Asian history from the darkness, and interpret them with new eyes,so as to look forward to the faint firefly light of its future significance.
