The emphasis of the thesis is the problematic model of family and the modern narrative in 1980s.More specifically,this thesis attempts to present the concrete manifestation of family in the modern narrative in 1980s,which could be the representation of humanity,the field of private realm or the carrier of feudalism.The metaphor of family in the texts is the outcome of politics and modern ideology in New Period.To understand how family participate in the modern narrative of novelists of different schools can help us return to the process of the establishment of modernity,in order to discover the historical content which was missed and masked,and then to think about various difficult problems in the process of modern transformation ofChina.The paper consists of six chapters:The first chapter based on the investigation of two kinds of narrative of inhuman Problem Children and inhuman revolutionary cadres in Scar literature&Introspection Novels,this chapter attempts to explain the various orientations of binary opposition rhetoric of family(humanity)and revolution(inhumanity)in Scar literature&Introspection Novels,which were missed and masked in the historical depth,The second chapter discusses the relationship of differences between three different groups and the families as the symbol of private realm,which implies the transformation of political ideology and the alternate of text norms.Meanwhile,this chapter analyses the Reform New People’s inner thinking structure of understanding the concept of Public and Private,investigating the way of establishing the relationship among self,family and society.The third chapter analyses Root—seeking novels to understand the two different threads of thoughts in Root—seeking.Novelists like Ah Cheng and Mo Yan searched for the identification of the non-institutionalized Confucian father—son relationship in the trend of depoliticizing,in order to reconstruct the utopian imagination of natural humanity.And novelists like Shaogong Han and Anyi Wang described two faces of family,reflecting the dilemma of the expression of subject of the third-world intellectuals.The fourth chapter outlines the image of contradictory patriarchal family in the Avant-garde literature,pointing out the view of the image is the same as the Binary Opposition between revolution and family in Scar literature&Introspection Novels,and mainly investigating the spiritual structure and limitation of the dehistoricizing individuals who came from families of violent atmosphere.The fifth chapter takes Lu Yao who is typical as an example to analyze the novelists’ discourse pattern of establishing the ideal modern family.And the conflict between ideal family and real family in his works implies the problems of modernization development under the urban and rural binary system.the sixth chapter mainly analyzes the relationship between the new overseas migrant female novelist Zhang Ling’s narrative of family and the 1980s,discussing the dream of new family and family trauma in her novels were deeply rooted in the history and culture of 1980s.
