Based on an overview of “substitution” translation skill and methods in translation practice,a systematic investigation into the two-way substitution mechanism of Russian-Chinese is conducted.Within the study, the author first defines the connotation and denotation of the concept of “substitution”,and then generalizes the specific categorizes of “substitution” by referring to the Russian-Chinese two-way comparable corpus. With supporting evidence from the corpus and translation examples the rationale of “substitution” is presented by drawing on theories from a multi-disciplinary perspective.Although substitution is widely applicable in translation practices,it has been unjustly undervalued by the academia and hence subjugated to insufficient exploration. The study,by investigating into literature related to “substitution”,tracing the evolution of the term, has revealed that it has been used in various areas. The lack of understanding of “substitution” will affect the development of the discipline of translation studies. Therefore, this paper attempts to explore the nature and the categories of “substitution”,with the aim to simulate the translation mechanism and explain the reason of the strategy in order to systematically study “substitution”.The thesis is consisted of five chapters.Chapter One is an overview of substitution studies. The purpose is to summarize the relevant research results at home and abroad, outlines the research findings of some Russian,European and American scholars,as well as a briefing of the domestic research progress, which helps to affirm the status and value of “substitution”.Next,it proposes the term “substitution” by tracing the development of terms related to similar concept. Then the term is defined from the perspectives of connotation and denotation to deepen the understanding of the nature of “substitution”.An analysis of the different types of “substitution” is presented in Chapter three, through which it is classified into the two categorizes of overt and covert with real case examples as illustrative evidence.Chapter Four explains the mechanism of substitution by drawing on theories and methods of thinking and cognitive sciences to simulate the operation process and mode of substitution.Chapter Five expounds on the rationale for substitution, and illustrates the theoretic foundation from disciplines such as linguistics, thinking sciences, cultural studies, philosophy, and aesthetics. The contribution of the research is to conduct a relatively objective, systematic and self-consistent study of substitution with elements such as “phenomenon-concept-categorize-mechanism-rationale” as its essential components. The systematic study on Russian-Chinese two-way translation has its origin from practices of translators in history, and helps to deepen the understanding of complete translation as well as the nature of translation. It also points out that acknowledging substitution as a translation strategy rather than a rudimental skill marks the further development of the discipline.Substitution as the central method of the seven methods of complete translation, follows the sublimation mechanism of complete translation. Its study is conducive to the construction of methodology of complete translation, supplemental to applied translation theory and hence indirectly benefits the development of translation theory.
