This dissertation is primarily about the "surreal" concept of China and related visual language. The origin of the question is the various languages in the new wave artists'works in the 1980s,including the deformation of Wang Guangyi and the surreal space and:time of Xu Lei.The original meaning of the concept "surreal" is closely related to the surrealist thoughts of the 20th century Its content is not limited to literature—including painting, film, and art—but also the social system, people's living conditions, and othersocial problems. It also has a huge influence on traditional art theory. In this paper my assumption is that the Chinese surrealistic visual language comes from the West, and I look specifically at three eras of China:the 1930s to the Anti-Japanese War(1931-1948);the New China construction period(1949-1978);reform and opening up to the end of the 20th century(1979-1999).Through different times, the Chinese mainland acquired a surrealistic visual language, having some awareness of"surreal",and related knowledge of fine arts and visual culture.Through the media and exhibitions, the ideological trend of Western surrealism and related art language spread to China. At the same time,Chinese modern art led to a combination of words and images,a "graphic" artistic language. In addition, from the"floating" discussion on the art of language, surrealistic visual language formed thesource of other possibilities.Through a combination of factors, such as the East,Surrealistic visual language rebuilt the unconscious to transform into the art of Chinese language.Between tradition and modern culture, the East and the West, the global and the local, which perspective is the owner of surreal artistic language?Understanding the scene is closely related to language itself,so this dissertation also involves several stages of visual culture, like murals, exhibitions, movies, and photographs. Finally, the audience, image producers, and the image itself interact with three associated elements:"reality","ideal",and "transcendence".These continuously contrasting language factors show how the surrealistic visual language become a kind of Cultural Pattern.
