GeHong was born in Gourong,Jiangsu Province in the foufh year during the Taikang period of Western JinDynasty(283),and died in the first year during the Jianyuan period ofEastern Jin Dynasty(343)when he was 61 years old.His register name was Zhichuan and pseudonym was Baopuzi.He wasknowledgeable and well versedinConfucianism and Taoism.GeHong was a prolific writer and he accomplished Baopuziin the first year during the Jianwu period ofEastern Jin Dynasty(317).Baopuzi Waipianwas trying to convey his ideas about sociopolitical problems,individual integrity and literary theory.BaopuziNeipian expressed his thoughts of how to become immortals which focus on alchemy.Since Baopuzicirculatedin the community from the Eastern Jin Dynasty,it had extensively and substantially influenced thesocialist ideology and culture.So it was a valuablesub-topic of the studies of Chinese thoughts to make a systematic study on the reception ofGeHong'sBaopuzi.The reception of Baopuziexhibited the tendency of Taoist in the Eastern Jin and the Southern and Northern Dynasties since it wasthe period for the development ofTaoism.As BaopuziNeipiancirculated in the community,the historians focused on the story of GeHong'slife and his alchemy theory.The Taoist scholars assimilatedhis ideas to developand reform the Taoism,on the other hand,the Buddhistsslashed his alchemy theory.Asthe alchemy theorywas widely accepted,the elixir imagery had made its first appearance in poems and passages.Meanwhile,the literary thoughts and the record of GeHong's life in BaopuziWaipian were valued.Sui and Tang Dynasties was the golden age for Chinese culture and also the reception of Baopuzi.The alchemy was at its peak and GeHong was widely known,also the alchemy theory of Baopuzi was inherited and developed in reference books,Taoist classics,poems and passages.Jinshu finished the biography of GeHong which upheldhis place in history.WeiZheng 'sQunshuZhiyao and reference booksquoted extensively fromBaopuzi Waipian which showed the development of the reception of BaopuziWaipian.The reception of Baopuziwas at a low ebb during the Song and YuanDynasties as the inner alchemy became prosperous and the alchemyhad declined.Thoughreference booksquoted fromBaopuziandused allusions in it which showed that it had become part of everyday life,people were not interested inalchemy anymore and GeHong'alchemy theoryhid from poems and passages.There were even some new Taoist classics which had held new ideas in the name ofBaopuzi.Ming and Qing and MinguoDynastieswasanother great time for the reception of Baopuzi.Since the rise of publishing,an environment forcriticism and the revitalization of research on Scholars,Baopuzicame back into public notice.It was printed,excerpted,criticized,collated many times and there were many new versions emerged which selectedThe Taoist Patrology which published in Ming Zhengtong as the original text.SunXingyan 'sPingjinguanseries was an importantemendationachievements of Baopuzi during this period.
